Biography

David Grubbs, born September 21, 1967, in the United States of America, is an American musician known for his roles as a guitarist and composer. His early bands included The Happy Cadavers and Squirrel Bait, releasing With Illustrations in 1982 and a 12" EP on Homestead Records, respectively. He then played with Bastro, which evolved into the avant-garde project Gastr del Sol with Jim O'Rourke. Notable releases from this period include Crookt, Crackt, or Fly, Upgrade & Afterlife. Following Gastr del Sol's breakup in 1997, he released numerous solo and collaborative records, often on Drag City label. His album The Spectrum Between was named "Album of the Year" by The Sunday Times in 2000. Grubbs also operates Blue Chopsticks label and has composed soundtracks for various installations and films. He was named a distinguished professor of music at Brooklyn College, CUNY, specializing in sound art and experimental music.
