Battle, a British indie rock group formed in Lewisham, South East London, emerged from the university collaboration of vocalist Jason Bavanandan and guitarist Jamie Ellis. Their early releases on Fierce Panda Records, notably the single "Isabelle" (25â¯Aprilâ¯2005) and "Demons" (26â¯Septemberâ¯2005), introduced a postâpunk sound that combined spacious guitar hooks with danceâoriented beats, earning comparisons to The Cure and Newâ¯Order. In Marchâ¯2006 the single "Tendency" entered the UK Singles Chart at Number 37, followed by "Children" in Juneâ¯2006, which received support from Radioâ¯1 DJ Zane Lowe. The bandâs first EP, Back to Earth, released 23â¯Octoberâ¯2006, featured new versions of earlier tracks and showcased a more organic, atmospheric direction; it was critically acclaimed though not commercially successful. Their fullâlength album Break the Banks followed on 3â¯Septemberâ¯2007, preceded by the singles "The Longest Time" (2â¯Julyâ¯2007) and "Paper Street" (13â¯Septemberâ¯2007). The group disbanded in Octoberâ¯2007. Subsequent online retrospectives and a revived website in 2025 honor the bandâs contributions to UK alternative rock.
