The Darling Buds, an alternative rock band from Newport, Wales, were formed in 1986. The group was named after H.E. Bates' novel The Darling Buds of May, which itself references Shakespeare's Sonnet 18. The original lineup included Andrea Lewis (vocals), Geraint Farr (guitar), and Simon (bass). Their debut single, "If I Said", released in February 1987, garnered positive reception and radio play on John Peelâs BBC Radio 1 show. The band's lineup evolved with the addition of Chris McDonagh (bass) and Richard Gray (drums), leading to their signing with Sony in 1988. Their critically acclaimed debut album, Pop Said..., released in February 1988, reached Number 30 in the UK Albums Chart. The band's subsequent albums included Crawdaddy and Erotica. Notable songs include "Hit The Ground", "You've Got To Choose", and "It's All Up To You". The Darling Buds disbanded in the mid-1990s due to lack of commercial success and internal frustrations. Post-breakup, Andrea Lewis Jarvis pursued acting and presenting, while other members took on various roles outside music. In 2010, the band reformed for a tribute concert and continued to release new material, including the Evergreen EP in April 2017.
