Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala formed A.R. Kane, an English musical duo, in 1986 in East London. They released the debut single "When You're Sad" (1986) on One Little Indian. They signed to 4AD and released the EP Lollita (1987), produced by Robin Guthrie. A.R. Kane collaborated with Colourbox, Chris Mackintosh, and Dave Dorrell as M/A/R/R/S, releasing "Pump Up the Volume" (1987), which reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. They topped the UK Independent Chart with the debut album 69 (1988), followed by the top 10 hit album i (1989). Ayuli coined the term "dreampop" to describe their sound. They disbanded in 1994 following the release of New Clear Child (1994). In 2012, One Little Indian released the compilation Complete Singles Collection (2012). A.R. Kane briefly reformed from 2016 to 2018 and reunited again in 2023, releasing the boxset A.R. Kive (2023).
