Biography

Andrey Baranov (born Andrej Baranov on January 15, 1986) is a Russian and Swiss classical violinist and concertmaster from Leningrad. Baranov began playing at age five and studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory (2005–2009) under Lev Ivashchenko and Vladimir Ovcharek, followed by studies at the Conservatoire de Lausanne with Pierre Amoyal. Baranov won first prizes at the Benjamin Britten Competition (2008), the Henri Marteau Competition (2008), and the Queen Elisabeth Competition (2012). Baranov also won the David Oistrakh and Paganini competitions in Moscow. Baranov performed with ensembles including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Collaborators included Martha Argerich and Teodor Currentzis. In 2012, Baranov co-founded the David Oistrakh Quartet, serving as first violinist. Baranov played the 1708 "Huggins" Stradivarius on loan between 2012 and 2016. Baranov joined the faculty of the Folkwang University of the Arts.
