Biography

Alice Stuart, born June 15, 1942, in Chelan, Washington, was an American blues and folk singer-songwriter and guitarist. She started taking piano lessons at age five and began playing guitar at 18, influenced by classical music and country artists of the 1940s and 1950s. Stuart's career launched with a performance at the Berkeley Folk Festival in 1964, followed by a debut release, All the Good Times (1964), which received positive reviews from Billboard magazine. She toured extensively with notable musicians such as Mississippi John Hurt, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Phil Ochs, and Joan Baez. In 1970, Stuart released the album Full Time Woman (1970) on Fantasy Records, featuring the single "Freedom's the Sound" / "Full Time Woman" (1970). Her song "Full Time Woman" was covered by artists including Jackie DeShannon and Doris Duke. Stuart died on July 31, 2023.
