Biography

Aja Monet Bacquie, born 21â¯Augustâ¯1987 in Brooklyn, Newâ¯York, is an American poet, writer, spokenâword vocalist, composer and producer who later settled in Losâ¯Angeles. She began writing poetry at eight and debuted publicly in high school, winning a talent show that propelled her into the Newâ¯York literary scene and led to her founding the club SABA. Aja Monetâs first major musical output arrived with the album when the poems do what they do in 2023, featuring collaborations with Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, Samora Pinderhughes and Eryn Allen Kane; the record earned a fourâstar review from Jazzwise, a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork, and a 2024 Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. She followed with the 2024 single "for the kidsâ¦" and the 2026 releases melting clocks and the color of rain. Monet was recognized as Nuyorican Poets CafÃ© Grand Slam Champion at nineteen, received an NAACP Image Award nomination, and her work was featured in Harryâ¯Belafonteâs 2023 documentary Following Harry.
