Biography
Born in Blanc-Mesnil (Seine-Saint-Denis) on July 31, 1977, Fabien Marsaud's destiny was thwarted in his teens by a swimming pool accident. Despite a year of rehabilitation, the after-effects forced him to walk with a crutch. The man who wanted to turn his passion for sport into his daily life turned to poetry and rap under the name Grand Corps Malade. Discovered and acclaimed by the general public in 2006, he was the first artist to bring slam poetry out of the closet and into the mainstream. This poet of everyday life, who transcends his physical handicap through his writing, achieved widespread success and two Victoires de la Musique awards with his first album, Midi 20, ranked No. 10 in France. After a transitional follow-up, the classically orchestrated Enfant de la Ville (2008), ranked No. 2, Grand Corps Malade broadened his musical palette with 3ème Temps (No. 3 in 2010), including a duet with Charles Aznavour on "Tu es donc j'apprends". In 2013, he called on Ibrahim Maalouf to set his lyrics to music on Funambule, his first gold album, ranked No. 5, which also features duets with Francis Cabrel, Richard Bohringer and Sandra Nkaké. Two years later, a host of artists including Renaud, Charles Aznavour and Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine answered his call for a concept album, Il Nous Restera Ãa (No. 5). The success of his autobiographical book Patients, published in 2012, led to the realization of his experience on the big screen in 2017, for a film nominated three times for the Césars. The slammer made Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2017 then turned his attention to his sixth album Plan B (2018), ranked No. 2. On his next album of duets, Mesdames (2020), Grand Corps Malade invites singers Véronique Sanson, Louane, Suzane, Kimberose and Melody Gardot, actresses Laura Smet and Leïla Behti, musicians Julie and Camille Berthollet, and comedian Camille Lellouche on the track "Mais je t'aime" (no. 9), which won a Victoire de la musique award. After the release of the single "Pas essentiel" at the end of 2020, the EP Ãphémère (No. 2 in 2022), sees Grand Corps Malade collaborate with Ben Mazué and Gaël Faye. Three years after Mesdames, the slammer returns with an eighth entitled Reflets, promoted by the singles "Retiens tes rêves" and "Autoreflet" . The year 2024 proves prolific, with the Plus reissue of Reflets adding six new tracks, including three duets with Emma Peters, Nikola and his son MCO. The year also saw the release of the Charles Aznavour biopic Monsieur Aznavour, which he directed with Mehdi Idir. The film gave rise to the virtual duet "à chacun sa bohème".
