Biography
An Indian musician and singer born in Flushing, New York, on July 21, 1991, Ganayva Doraiswamy grew up in the Tamil Nadu region, where she learned the art of singing, Bharata Natyam dance and several instruments. After graduating in drama from Broward Community College and in psychology, she continued her studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, at UCLA in ethno-musicology and at Harvard in creative practice. After recording a debut album of vocal jazz sung in Tamil and Sanskrit, Aikyam: Onnu (2018), Ganayva set to work during the Covid-19 pandemic composing for Peter Sellars' film This Body Is So Impernanent, among other pieces such as the sixty-four-hour Atlas Unlimited: Acts VII-X (2019), or writing short stories. She collaborates with Rajna Swaminathan, Sunny Jain, Esperanza Spalding, Kofi Flexxx, Raveena, Immanuel Wilkins, Munir Hossn and Indian composer A.R. Rahman for the film Raayan (2024). Two further albums were released in 2024: Like the Sky I've Been Too Quiet, with contributions from Shabaka Hutchings for his Native Rebel label, and Daughter of a Temple, inspired by the sacred works of Alice Coltrane, for which she was joined by Esperanza Spalding, Vijay Iyer, Charles Overton and IONE. In 2025, Nilam is equally inspired by her Indian roots, spiritual jazz and new age modernity.
