Biography
Hailing from New York's Harlem district, The Last Poets were true precursors of rap, surrounding themselves with committed poetry, jazz and African percussion on their explosive debut album released in 1970. Muslims close to the Black Panthers, they distinguished themselves throughout the decade with manifestos such as This Is Madness (1971), Chastisment (1972) and Delights of the Garden (1977). After a long break and a more electro-oriented album, Oh, My People (1984), two clans competed for the name The Last Poets: the authors of Scatterap/Home (1994) and On The One (1995) and the other half, who recorded Holy Terror (1993) with George Clinton, Bootsy Collins (Funkadelic), Bill Laswell and Bernie Worrell (Material) and Time Has Come (1997), albums that remained unreleased.
