(Young) Pioneers were an American folk punk ensemble from Richmond, Virginia, active between 1993 and 1999. The group was established by Adam Nathanson, Brooks Headley, and Neil Burke. They achieved professional recognition as an overtly political ensemble with lyrics addressing radical heroes and oppressive politics. Their recording career began with the track âYoung Pioneersâ (1993), followed by the track âFood Stampsâ (1994). After Burke departed in 1994, Tim Barry joined the ensemble on bass and vocals before being replaced by Marty Key in 1995. Their discography includes the debut studio recording First Virginia Volunteers (1995) and the extended play Crimewave (1996). Headley departed in 1997 and was replaced by Jonathan Fuller and later Fred LaPier. Their recording career includes the studio recording Free the Young Pioneers Now! (1998). The ensemble conducted tours with groups including At the Drive-In, Avail, and The Locust before becoming inactive in February 1999.
