Biography
Yannis Kyriakides, born on August 1, 1969, in Limassol, Cyprus, is a composer of contemporary classical music and sound art. He emigrated to the United Kingdom at age five and studied composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Louis Andriessen and Dick Raaijmakers. Kyriakides' career began with the release of his album A ConSPIracy Cantata in 2001, which earned him the Gaudeamus International Composers Award. He co-founded the record label UNSOUNDS and has collaborated extensively with ensembles such as Asko Ensemble and musikFabrik. Notable works include An Ocean of Rain, an opera that opened the Aldeburgh Festival in 2008. Kyriakides has received several awards, including the Willem Pijper Prize in 2011 for "Dreams of the Blind" and the International Music Council's International Rostrum of Composers prize in 2014 for "Words and Song Without Words".
