X-Marks the Pedwalk, originally named Scarecrow, was founded in 1987 by André Schmechta. Initially collaborating with Jörg Böhme on their first single, "Black Door", the band signed to Zoth Ommog Records and released their debut EP, Arbitrary Execution, in 1989. In 1990, they produced singles including "Danger" and "Abattoir", followed by their first full-length album, Freaks, in 1991. Böhme left in 1992, with Schmechta's brother Raive Yarx joining as a replacement. Notable releases include Human Desolation (1993) and The Killing Had Begun (1994). In 1995, they introduced a new style with "Facer", combining techno-dance and electro-industrial elements, further solidified in albums Meshwork (1995) and Drawback (1996). Schmechta took a hiatus from 1998 to 2010. The band resumed activity in 2010 with the album Inner Zone Journey (2010), followed by The Sun, The Cold And My Underwater Fear (2012).
