Biography
VaShawn Mitchell is a gospel singer born in Harvey, Illinois, on November 19, 1976. He began working with his mentor Lonnie Hunter at St. Mark's Baptist Church, and at age 20 his musical potential was noticed by Bishop Larry Trotter, who hired him as minister of music at Sweet Holy Spirit Church in Chicago. Mitchell went on to produce some of the most talked-about songs in the African-American church, such as "Don't Last" and "My Worship Is for Real". In 1998, he produced his first solo project, So Satisfied. A songwriter, Mitchell has penned hits for Smokie Norful, Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Bishop Paul Morton. He is also responsible for worship and, over the years, has composed several successful choir recordings. After several successful albums such as Another Chance (2002), Believe in Your Dreams (2005), Promises (2007) and Triumphant (2010), in 2012 the singer created the Norman Youth and Arts Foundation, named in memory of his grandfather and sponsoring summer arts camps for young people in the Chicago area. He continued his career with Created4This (2012), Unstoppable (2014) and Secret Place (Live in South Africa) (2016). On December 31, 2016, VaShawn Mitchell was appointed General Music and Worship Arts Leader at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. He goes on to record the albums Elements (2019) and Chapter X: See the Goodness (2023).
