Unto Ashes, an American musical ensemble based in New York City, was founded by Michael Laird and Susanna Melendez in 1997. The group incorporated elements of madrigal, folk, neo-medieval, and darkwave into their music. Their debut album Moon Oppose Moon was released in 1999, marking the beginning of a prolific career with the Projekt label. Throughout their career, Unto Ashes collaborated with various artists including Paul Ash, Catherine Bent, Sonne Hagal, and Bret Helm from Audra. Notable releases include Saturn Return (2001), Empty Into White (2003), and The Blood of My Lady (2009). In 2006, they toured Europe with Qntal, featuring Mariko a.k.a. Sarah Newman who left the band that year to work on related projects. The band also performed at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen Leipzig in 2004, 2009, 2015, and 2019. Their later albums include Burials Foretold (2012) and Orchids Grew Here (2023).
