Biography

Tokiko Kato, born Tokiko Fujimoto on 27 December 1943 in Harbin, Manchukuo, is a Japanese singer whose career spans several decades. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, she entered the music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, releasing albums such as 私の中のひとり (1970) and later Polydor titles including この世に生まれてきたら (1974) and さびた車輪 (1977). A major turning point in her career came earlier with the song “ひとり寝の子守唄”(1966), which established her as a prominent singer-songwriter in Japan. In the early 1980s, she collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto on the album Miłość ci wszystko wybaczy (1982), reflecting her interest in international repertoire and expanding her artistic scope. Throughout the 1990s, Tokiko Kato continued releasing studio albums, including 花 HANA(1995), and remained an active recording and performing artist. In the 2000s and 2010s, she sustained her career through new releases, concerts, and retrospectives, while also being recognized for her cultural contributions, including major Japanese music awards and international honors. Her extensive discography and long-running public presence have secured Tokiko Kato a lasting place in Japanese popular music history.
