Sayuri Kume (real name Kume Sayuri), born 11â¯Mayâ¯1958 in Kunitachi, Tokyo, is a Japanese singerâsongwriter who emerged from a musical upbringing that included hymns and popular western acts. She began writing lyrics and composing in high school and made her debut under the stage name Saki Kubota in 1979 with the single "Ihojin", which sold 1.4â¯million copies and reached Number 1 on the Japanese singles chart. The following year she released the album Yumegatari, which dominated the Oricon chart for seven consecutive weeks, and the album Tenkai, which peaked at number 11. In 1980 she earned the Female Newcomer Award at the 13th Japan Record Sales Awards. Her 1981 single "NijÅ«goji" charted at number 19, and she continued to release albums such as Saudade (1980) and Yoruno Sokowa Yawarakana Maboroshi (1984). After her farewell concert in 1984, she shifted focus to Christian music under her married name, releasing four albums from 1987 to 2017. In 2007 she became a goodwill ambassador for the Japan Bible Society, and her 2020 box set Saki Kubota Premium commemorated her 40th debut anniversary.
