Biography

This Heat was an English experimental rock ensemble from Camberwell established in 1976. The group consisted of the musicians Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward, and Gareth Williams. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by experimental rock and post-punk. The ensemble was founded by Bullen and Hayward. Their recording career began after they sent a demo tape to the musician John Peel in 1977. This Heat achieved professional recognition for the eponymous debut studio recording This Heat (1979) released on the label Piano. Their discography included the extended play Health and Efficiency (1980) and the studio recording Deceit (1981) released on the label Rough Trade Records. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the compilation recording The Peel Sessions (1988). The group became inactive in 1982. Williams died of cancer in December 2001. Bullen and Hayward achieved professional recognition for resuming activity under the name This Is Not This Heat between 2016 and 2019. Their recording career included the compilation recording Made Available: John Peel Sessions (1996) and the box set Out of Cold Storage (2006).
