Biography

Charles Hayward is an English drummer. In 1976, he co-founded This Heat with Charles Bullen and Gareth Williams, developing an experimental approach that incorporated tape loops, found sounds, and studio manipulation before releasing their self-titled debut album in 1979. Following This Heat, Hayward worked with several artists and appeared in session roles before forming Camberwell Now with Trefor Goronwy and Stephen Rickard. Hayward also launched a long-running solo career, beginning with Survive The Gesture (1987). He has also been a frequent collaborator in experimental and improvisational projects, notably joining Massacre with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith in the late 1990s.
