Biography

English indie rock band, The Mock Turtles, were formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, in 1985. Led by Martin Coogan on vocals, guitar, and percussion, the group initially gained attention with their debut album Turtle Soup in 1990, released under the Imaginary label. The band's breakthrough came with the release of "Can You Dig It?", originally a B-side to "Lay Me Down". Re-issued by Siren Records with additional guitar work, the song charted at number 18 on the UK Singles Chart in 1991. Despite follow-up singles like "And Then She Smiles" failing to replicate this success, The Mock Turtles continued to perform and were featured at notable events such as the 'Great Indie Festival – A Midsummer's Day Dream' at Milton Keynes Bowl in June 1991. However, they were dropped by their label shortly thereafter. In late 2002 and 2003, Vodafone used "Can You Dig It?" for an advertising campaign, leading to a remix by Norman Cook that reached number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. This resurgence resulted in the compilation album Can You Dig It? – The Best of The Mock Turtles, released in March 2003.
