The Matches is an American rock band from Oakland, California, formed in 1997 as The Locals. The group consisted of Shawn Harris, Matt Esposito, Justin San Souci, and Matt Whalen. After changing their name to avoid conflict with a Chicago band, they self-released their debut album E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals in 2003. The Matches signed with Epitaph Records, which re-released the album in 2004. Their second album, Decomposer, was released in 2006 and reached Number 18 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. With their third album, A Band in Hope (2008), they achieved their only entry on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 179. The band went on hiatus in 2009 but reunited for several shows and tours starting in 2014, celebrating the ten-year anniversaries of each of their studio albums. A documentary film about the band, titled Bleeding Audio, premiered at film festivals in 2020.
