Biography
The Fatima Mansions were formed in 1988 in England by singerâkeyboardist Cathal Coughlan, formerly of Microdisney, who adopted the name from the Fatima Mansions housing project in Dublin. The original lineâup included Nick Allum, Jonathan Fell, Zac Woolhouse and Aindrias O'Gruama, and the group quickly gained a reputation for energetic live performances and provocative lyrics. Their early releases included the single "Blues For Ceausescu" (1990) and the EP "Hive" (1991), which established their presence on the indie scene. In 1992 the band signed to Kitchenware and released the singles "1000%" and "Evil Man", with the latter featuring the UK single "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)", which reached Number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. That same year the group opened a leg of U2âs Zoo TV Tour, a controversial appearance that attracted media attention after he swore and insulted the Pope in Milan. The following year they released Lost in the Former West, a project styled after Liberaceâs glamour and including a cover of "Nite Flights" that entered the UK Top 60. After a series of touring and recording activities the band disbanded in the midâ1990s, leaving a legacy of sharp lyricism and a brief but notable chart impact.
