Biography

Atmospheric alternative rock band, The Choir was formed in 1983 in Southern California by Derri Daugherty on guitar and lead vocals, Steve Hindalong on drums and percussion, and Tim Chandler on bass. They began as Youth Choir within the Calvary Chapel Christian punk and alternative music scene. Their first official recording was "It's So Wonderful" released in 1983 on What's Shakin'. The band's debut album under the name Youth Choir, Voices in Shadows, was released in 1985 with Mike Sauerbrey on bass. In 1986, they signed to Myrrh Records and changed their name to The Choir, releasing their first album under this moniker, Diamonds And Rain. Notable albums from their early career include Chase The Kangaroo (1988) and Wide-Eyed Wonder (1989). In 1994, The Choir relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Their album Free Flying Soul (1996), won a GMA Dove Award for Alternative/Modern Rock Album of the Year. Their album Flap Your Wings (2000) earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. Long-time bass guitarist Tim Chandler died in 2018. The band continued to perform and release new material, including 2025 singles "You Bring the Fire Down" and "The Darkness", which were released digitally.
