James Leyland Kirby, known professionally as The Caretaker, was born on May 9, 1974, in Stockport, England. His music explores memory and its gradual deterioration, nostalgia, and melancholy. His first three releases comprised treated and manipulated samples of 1930s ballroom pop recordings. In 2005, The Caretaker released Theoretically Pure Anterograde Amnesia, a series of free MP3 downloads that marked a shift in his sound towards more abstract music. His breakthrough album, An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011), received critical acclaim. In 2016, The Caretaker began his final project, Everywhere at the End of Time, a series of six interlinked releases. The project, under the History Always Favours the Winners label, was released in stages from 2016 to 2019.
