Biography

Texas Anna Smith, also known as Texas Anna Gladden or Texas Gladden, was born on March 14, 1895, in Rich Valley, Smyth County, Virginia, and was an American folk singer known for her traditional Appalachian ballad style. She began singing publicly at the White Top Festival in the mid-1930s and made early recordings for the Virginia Folklore Society. In September 1941, she started recording with Alan Lomax, a pioneering folk archivist and musicologist. The largest collection of her work, which includes 37 tracks of songs and interviews, is compiled on the album Texas Gladden: Ballad Legacy, which Lomax produced as part of his Southern Journey series. This album features traditional ballads such as "Barbara Allen" and "Mary Hamilton". The album was reissued on CD by Rounder Records in 2001. Her work gained renewed attention during the 1960s through references by Joan Baez. She passed away in Roanoke, Virginia, in May 23, 1966.
