Biography

The Down Hill Strugglers, originally known as The Dust Busters, are an American old-time string band trio from Brooklyn, New York. Formed in 2008 by Craig Judelman, Eli Smith, and Walker Shepard, the band released their debut album, The Dust Busters (2009), the following year. After Judelman's departure in 2012, multi-instrumentalist Jackson Lynch joined, and the group renamed itself The Down Hill Strugglers. Their subsequent albums include Old Man Below (2012) on Smithsonian Folkways, and Lone Prairie (2017) on Jalopy Records. The band has toured extensively across the United States and Europe, performing at notable festivals such as, the Bourgas International Folklore Festival in 2010. In 2013, they contributed to the soundtrack of Inside Llewyn Davis. The band's notable achievements include winning the Independent Music Awards for Best Bluegrass Album in 2013 with Old Man Below. The Down Hill Strugglers continued to master their Appalachian string tunes with great acknowledgment with the release of Old Juniper (2024) on Jalopy Records.
