Although British, Welsh guitarist and banjo player Gwenifer Raymond specializes in the early American style, combining folk, country and early blues. Born in Taff's Well, Wales, on August 28, 1985, she played in rock and punk bands, before turning to solo acoustic guitar and developing a complex, energetic style blending influences from John Fahey, Dock Boggs and old-time American traditions. Based in Brighton, she made a name for herself in the second half of the 2010s with her brilliant fingerpicking technique, inspired by the American Primitive style, delving into the roots of rural blues and Appalachian folk. In 2018, Gwenifer Raymon released her debut album You Never Were Much of a Dancer on the Tompkins Square label, hailed for its virtuosity and intensity, followed in 2020 by a second opus entitled Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain, where she delves deeper into her Welsh roots and the dark folk imagery that runs through her music. Considered a rising star on the contemporary acoustic guitar scene, she performs regularly in the UK, Europe and the USA, asserting her singular place in the instrumental folk revival. In 2025, her third studio album Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark was released on the Busy Bodies label.
