Sydney Stanley Kitchen was a South African guitarist, singer-songwriter and poet, born on February 14, 1951, in Durban, South Africa. He began singing at a young age in his local church and later performed with bands such as The Kittens, while also appearing with Parkinsonâs Law during his youth. In the late 1970s, he formed the jazz-rock band Equinoxe and the experimental acoustic group Harry was a Snake. His solo career began in 1980. Kitchen released City Child in 1995, followed by other releases such as Africaâs Not for Sissies in 2001, and remained closely associated with the Splashy Fen festival, where he performed annually from 1990 to 2010. A documentary on his life, Fool in a Bubble, premiered in 2010 alongside a companion album. Kitchen passed away on March 22, 2011.
