Alan Gowen (August 19, 1947 â May 17, 1981) was an English fusion and progressive rock keyboardist and composer from Hampstead, London. Gowen joined Assagai in 1971 and founded Sunship in 1972 with Jamie Muir and Laurie Baker. In 1973, Gowen formed Gilgamesh and collaborated with Hatfield and the North, leading to the 1975 formation of National Health with Dave Stewart. Gowen left National Health in 1977 but performed on the debut album National Health (1978). In 1978, Gowen formed Soft Heap with Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, and Pip Pyle; the group also toured as Soft Head, releasing the album Rogue Element (1978). Gowen recorded the second Gilgamesh album Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into (1978) before rejoining National Health in 1979. The final album recorded by Gowen was Before a Word Is Said (1981). Gowen died from leukemia on May 17, 1981.
