Biography
The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, an Australian jug band, formed in Melbourne in 1969 and was centered around Mic Conway on lead vocals, washboard, and ukulele; his brother Jim Conway on harmonica, kazoo, and vocals. Inspired by early jazz recordings, the Conway brothers initially formed the Jellybean Jug Band while in high school. After leaving school, they established the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, which evolved into a national icon with film and television appearances. Their debut single "My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes" (1972) reached number 35 on the Go-Set National Top 40 in November 1972. The group's first album Smoke Dreams was released in June 1973, reaching the Australian Albums Top 20. Their second studio album Wangaratta Wahine, produced by Ern Rose at Armstrong Studios, was released in late 1974 and included the singles "Your Feets Too Big" and "Hernando's Hideaway". The group disbanded in September 1980 and reformed in 2010 as Captain Matchbox Reignited only to disband again in 2012.
