Biography

R&B and pop singer/songwriter Sybil – born on December 9, 1966, in Peterson, New Jersey – is best known for a string of hits and albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She signed with the then-popular Next Plateau Records in 1986 and quickly released her debut single “Falling in Love”, which reached Number 29 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart. Her debut album, Let Yourself Go, was released in 1987 and charted in the Top 100 in the UK. The title track reached the Top 50 on the U.S. R&B chart. Her second album, Sybil (1989), featured her cover versions of Dionne Warwick’s “Don’t Make Me Over” and “Walk On By”, which were both international hits. The album rose to Number 12 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, her highest album chart position. The album was retitled Walk On By for release in the UK. It seemed as if her career was on an upward trajectory but the release of her third album, Sybilization (1990), was not nearly as successful as predicted. After a three-year break, her 1993 album Doin’ It Now! contained the UK Number 3 hit “The Love I Lost”. Two month after Doin’ It Now! was released, the album Good ‘n’ Ready was released in Europe. Both albums shared a similar tracklist, but the U.S. version of the album had a soul & R&B feel and the Europe release had a Europop vibe. In 1997, Sybil left Next Plateau, who issued Greatest Hits that year. Sybil released the Europe and Japan-only album Still a Thrill, her last full-length to date. Since then, she’s released a series of singles, none of which have charted.
