Biography

Atlantic Starr, an American R&B band formed in 1976 in Greenburgh, New York, initially included trumpeter Duke Jones, drummer Porter Carroll Jr., bassist Clifford Archer, percussionist and flautist Joseph Phillips, guitarist Sheldon Tucker, and three brothers: David Lewis, Wayne Lewis, and Jonathan Lewis. The band's lineup stabilized around the Lewis brothers, Phillips, lead singer Sharon Bryant, trumpeter William Sudderth III, and saxophonist Damon Rentie. In 1977, they moved to Westwood, California, and signed with A&M Records under the name Atlantic Starr. Atlantic Starr released their self-titled debut album in January 1978, followed by Straight to the Point in April 1979. Their breakthrough came in the mid-1980s with the release of "Secret Lovers" from the album As the Band Turns, which achieved significant crossover success on the pop charts. The band's lineup evolved over time, with Barbara Weathers replacing Sharon Bryant and later being succeeded by Porscha Martin and Rachel Oliver. In 1987, Atlantic Starr scored a Number 1 hit with "Always" from their album All in the Name of Love. Following this success, they continued to release albums including We're Movin' Up (1989) and Love Crazy (1991), which featured hits like "My First Love" and "Masterpiece", respectively. The band's relationship with Warner Bros. Records ended in 1994, leading to the release of Time under Arista Records. In 2017, they released their 13th album, Metamorphosis.
