Behind the name Simple E lies American singer Erica Williams, whose claim to fame is the hit "Play My Funk". The California-born rapper signed a contract with Fox Records, which released "Play My Funk" in 1994 . Placed on the soundtrack of the film Sugar Hill, the track climbed to number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and paved the way for Colouz Uv Sound, released a few months later and remaining Simple E's only album. Produced by D'wayne Wiggins, a member of the group Tony! Toni! Toné! reached number 88 in the R&B/Hip-Hop charts in the autumn of 1994. Erica Williams later reappeared on a track on rapper Richie Rich's Seasoned Veteran album, "It's Not About You".
