Biography

Real name Lloyd Lorenz Smith, R&B singer Trey Lorenz was born in Florence, North Carolina, on January 19, 1969. Revealed by his duet with Mariah Carey on a cover of The Jackson 5's classic "I'll Be There" during an MTV Unplugged performance in 1992, which charted internationally, Trey Lorenz continued his solo career with the hit single "Someone to Hold" (1992), composed and produced by his college friend Mariah Carey (also a backing vocalist), which reached every possible American R&B chart and No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Trey Lorenz album released in September 1992 also featured the hits "Photograph of Mary" and "Just to Be Close to You", written by Lionel Richie. However, Epic Records parted company with the artist, who wrote for New Kids on the Block and worked with TLC, Selena, Usher, Basia and Redhead Kingpin and the F.B.I., before recording "Make You Happy" for the Men in Black soundtrack in 1997. He reunited with Mariah Carey on several occasions, opening for her on tour and inviting her on the duet "Pisces", taken from her second album Mr. Mista, released in 2006. He subsequently produced the singles "Magic" (2024) and "Makes Me Wanna Dance" (2025).
