Biography

The She Rockers were a female hip‑hop trio from London, comprising Donna “She Roc” McConnell, Antonia “MC Aurra” Jolly, and Dupe Fagbesa, with Alison Clarkson (later Betty Boo) appearing on early releases. McConnell, born in London in 1967, began rapping in local clubs before the group’s first appearance on the Known 2 Be Down compilation in 1987. Their breakthrough came with the single "Give It A Rest" (Music of Life, 1988), produced by Professor Griff, which charted modestly and led to a support slot for Public Enemy in the United States. After Clarkson and Fagbesa departed in 1989, McConnell and Jolly signed with Jive Records, releasing the album Rockers From London (1990) that incorporated hip‑house elements and featured production from Todd Terry, Technotronic, and Double Trouble. The single "Jam It Jam" peaked at number 58 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1990. The trio toured with De La Soul and contributed to the evolving UK hip‑hop scene before disbanding in the early 1990s; no further recordings were issued. Their work remains noted for bridging UK rap with emerging house sounds during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
