Biography

Steady B, born Warren Sabir McGlone on 17 September 1969 in the United States, emerged from Philadelphia’s burgeoning hip‑hop scene as a rapper who would soon be remembered for both his early recordings and later legal troubles. He first gained attention in 1985 with a series of 12" singles on the Pop Art label, including "Take Your Radio" and "Fly Shanté", which positioned him alongside contemporaries such as Schoolly D and the Fresh Prince. In 1986 he released his debut album What's My Name, which reached number 40 on the Top R&B/Hip‑Hop Albums chart, followed by The Essential Steady B in 2015, a retrospective compilation. His most commercially successful single, "Going Steady", achieved Gold status in 1989. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Steady B collaborated with local artists and performed internationally, notably at the “UK Fresh 86” event in London. In 1991 he co‑founded the hardcore group C.E.B., whose sole album Countin’ Endless Bank produced the number 5 Billboard Hot Rap single "Get the Point". His musical career concluded abruptly in 1996 when he was convicted of second‑degree murder in the death of Philadelphia Police Officer Lauretha Vaird and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
