Severed Heads, an Australian electronic music group, was founded in 1979 as Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign by Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright in Sydney. Tom Ellard joined the duo later that year, and the band released their early works on cassette albums, including Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign Go Cruising fer Burgers!. The group's initial music was characterized by industrial sounds and tape loops. By 1981, Fielding and Wright had left the band, leaving Ellard as the sole consistent member. In 1984, Severed Heads released "Dead Eyes Opened" as a single, which reached Number 16 on the ARIA Singles Chart after being remixed in 1994. The group's lineup fluctuated over the years, with notable members including Garry Bradbury, Simon Knuckey, Stephen Jones, and Paul Deering. Severed Heads achieved significant chart success with singles like "Greater Reward" (1988) and "All Saints Day" (1989), both of which reached the top 30 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The band released several albums, including Haul Ass (1998) and Under Gail Succubus (2006). Ellard disbanded Severed Heads in 2007 but reunited the group for various performances, including a 30th-anniversary concert in 2010 and tours supporting Gary Numan. The band's final shows took place in September 2019.
