Biography

Seo Taiji is the stage name of South Korean musician Jeong Hyeon-Cheol, who helped pioneer the K-pop industry with his band Seo Taiji and Boys during the 1990s before launching a successful solo career. He was born in Seoul on February 21, 1972, and began playing heavy metal music as a teenager before forming Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992. The band enjoyed immense popularity during its four-year run, with each of Seo Taiji and Boys' four studio albums selling more than 1.5 million copies. Taiji, who served as the group's main songwriter and de facto leader, initially retired from the music business following the band's breakup in 1996, only to reappear in 1998 with the self-titled solo album Seo Tai Ji. The record marked a return to his hard-rock roots, which Taiji continued to explore with his well-received follow-up, Ultramania, in 2000. Featuring the Number 1 singles "Ultramania," "Internet War," and "Feel the Soul," Ultramania also found Taiji experimenting with nu metal, a genre that also informed albums like 2004's 7th Issue and 2008's 8th Atomos. After a multi-year hiatus, Seo Taiji released Quiet Night in 2014 and began prepping for a collaborative concert to celebrate his 25 years in the music industry. Named SEOTAIJI 25 TIME: TRAVELER, the concert was held in 2017 and featured duets with his K-pop successors, BTS.
