Biography
Born in Paju, South Korea, on February 3, 1972, vocalist Yoon Do-hyun pursued a solo career for several years before forming Yoon Do-hyun Band, whose explosive version of hard-rock earned critical acclaim and commercial success during the early 2000s. Yoon Do-hyun attended high school in Gyeonggi and graduated in 1991, launching his music career shortly thereafter. His debut album, In Front of the Post Office in Autumn, was released in 1994 and failed to find an audience, leading him to form Yoon Do-hyun Band in 1996. He appeared in the South Korean film Jungle Story that same year, kicking off an acting career that would later include stage roles in musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar and Hedwig and the Angry Inch as well as movies like Arahan. Music remained his focus, however, with Yoon Do-hyun Band soon becoming one of the most popular rock acts in South Korea. The group won an Mnet Asian Music Award for "Best Rock Performance" with "Love Two" in 2002, shortened its name to YB in 2005, and eventually sold more than 2 million albums. With Yoon Do-hyun serving as the band's frontman, leader, and chief songwriter, YB also emerged as cultural liaisons, serving as the first Korean band to tour Europe, the first Korean band to play the American festival South By Southwest, and the first rock band to perform an officially sanctioned show in North Korea. Yoon Do-hyun later rekindled his solo career with 2005's Difference and released a handful of EPs throughout the following 15 years, including 2009's Harmony (present for Fly, Penguin) and 2020's Acoustic Forest: Want to Go Music Camping? A frequent guest on variety shows in South Korea, he remained a cultural force through the early 2020s, with single "What the Ggang?" arriving in 2022.
