Biography

Self Esteem is the musical project of Rebecca Lucy Taylor, a bold and genre-pushing UK pop artist known for her powerful lyrics, theatrical performances, and unflinching explorations of feminism, identity, and self-worth. Born on 15 October 1986 in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, she first gained recognition as one half of the indie-folk duo Slow Club before launching Self Esteem in 2017 to pursue a more personal and sonically ambitious path. With her debut album Compliments Please (2019), Self Esteem introduced a striking blend of alt-pop, R&B, and experimental production, earning praise for its emotional honesty and feminist messaging. Her breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed second album Prioritise Pleasure (2021), which cemented her status as one of the UK's most vital contemporary voices. The album was shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize and widely celebrated for its anthemic empowerment tracks, including the title song and the viral hit “I Do This All The Time.” Known for her theatrical live shows, distinctive visual style, and fearless stage presence, Self Esteem combines pop grandeur with performance art to deliver experiences that are as emotionally resonant as they are empowering.
