Biography
A Scottish soul starlet with a velvet voice and love of Nina Simone, Emeli Sandé (born 10 March 1987 in Sunderland) left her medical studies at Glasgow University to pursue her dreams of music stardom. Moving to London in 2009, she penned songs for Cheryl Cole, Alesha Dixon, and Tinie Tempah and made her singing debut on Chipmunk's Top 10 hit "Diamond Rings." Named by Simon Cowell as his favourite new songwriter, Emeli Sandé reached Number 2 in the UK with her first solo single "Heaven" before featuring on Professor Green's Number 1 hit "Read All About It." Debut album Our Version Of Events (2012) shot straight to the top of the UK album charts and Emeli Sandé won the BRIT Awards Critic's Choice, quickly acclaimed as one of the nation's hottest young talents. Adept at creating heartfelt, honest pop anthems, she has also written for Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis and Sugababes and received 2.5 million YouTube views in three weeks for her third single "Next To Me; " and she won a further two BRIT Awards in February 2013: Best British Female Solo Artist, and British Album of the Year. Her second studio album Long Live the Angels arrived in 2016 and the following year she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to music. She worked with producer Troy Miller for her third album Real Life, released in 2019, while moving to an independent label for the first time for her fourth studio album Let's Say for Instance. Emeli Sandé's fifth album How Were We to Know came out in 2023.
