Biography

Richard Barbieri (born 30 November 1957 in London) is an English keyboard player, composer, and programmer whose career began after a brief stint at a bank. He joined the new wave band Japan in 1975 and helped create the album Tin Drum (1981), later contributing to Mick Karn’s solo work. After Japan split in 1982, Richard Barbieri collaborated on the Dolphin Brothers project (Catch the Fall, 1987) and on Rain Tree Crow's eponymous album (1991). In 1993 he joined the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, where he remained the longest‑tenured member; the group released In Absentia (2000), Deadwing (2005) and Fear of a Blank Planet (2007), the last earning two Grammy nominations. His solo releases include Things Buried (2004), Stranger Inside (2008), Planets + Persona (2017) and Under a Spell (2021). He has worked with artists such as Steve Jansen, Jan Linton, Nobukazu Takemura, Steve Hogarth and Tim Bowness. In 2026, he released the solo album Hauntings.
