Cosmograf is the musical project of Robin Armstrong, a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Waterlooville, near Portsmouth, UK. Since its inception in 2008, Cosmograf has been recognised for its cinematic approach to progressive rock, blending 1970s classic rock influences with modern elements of metal, electronica, and conceptual storytelling. His musical journey began in his youth with classical guitar and keyboard training. He later formed bands such as Legend, Blue Steal, and Cry of Love, before pursuing a career in the water industry. However, his passion for music remained, leading him to experiment with electronic music under the moniker Toxic Czar in the 1990s. Eventually, he returned to guitar playing, drawing inspiration from classic rock and metal guitarists. In 2010, he established his own recording studio, The Trees, in his garden, which became the creative hub for his projects, including Cosmograf. Cosmograf's debut album, Freed from the Anguish, was followed by End of Ecclesia in 2009. However, it was the third release, When Age Has Done Its Duty (2011), that garnered significant attention, earning a Limelight nomination at the PROG Magazine Awards. The album's success marked a turning point for the project, leading to collaborations with notable musicians and a growing presence in the progressive rock community. Subsequent albums, such as The Man Left in Space (2013), Capacitor (2014), and The Unreasonable Silence (2016), continued to showcase his ability to craft intricate narratives and atmospheric compositions. Notably, The Unreasonable Silence was influenced by Albert Camus's essay The Myth of Sisyphus, exploring themes of existentialism and the human condition. In 2019, Cosmograf released Mind Over Depth, a heavier and more introspective album featuring drummer Kyle Fenton and guest bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree). The album delved into the complexities of the human mind and the challenges of self-awareness. The 2022 release, Heroic Materials, presented a poignant narrative from the perspective of a 99-year-old World War II Spitfire pilot reflecting on his past. In 2025, he released a new album as Cosmograf, The Orphan Epoch, which welcomed back drummer Kyle Fenton and featured a guest spot from Peter Jones on saxophone for "Seraphim Reels".
