Ratos de Porão, a Brazilian crossover thrash band from São Paulo, was formed in 1981. The core lineup included João Gordo on vocals and Jão on drums, later contributing guitar. Influenced by UK hardcore bands like Discharge and Charged G.B.H., Ratos de Porão began writing songs that criticized Brazilian society. Their debut album, Crucificados pelo sistema, was released in 1984 on the Ataque Frontal label and became a punk classic worldwide. The band's initial lineup included João Gordo, Mingau, Jabá, and Jão. After disbanding due to gang violence in São Paulo, Ratos de Porão reformed in 1985 with a new sound that blended crossover thrash and heavy metal. Their subsequent albums Descanse em paz (1986) and Cada dia mais sujo e agressivo (1987) solidified their place in the Brazilian metal scene. In 1989, they signed with Roadrunner Records and released Brasil, produced by Harris Johns.
