Biography

Popeda, a Finnish rock band from Tampere, was formed in November 1977 by Pauli "Pate" Mustajärvi and Ilari "Ilpo" Ainiala. The band initially consisted of Mustajärvi on vocals, Ainiala on bass guitar, Arwo Mikkonen on guitar, Matti Palmunen on drums, and Ari Puukka on guitar. They were signed to Poko Rekords by Epe Helenius in 1977. Popeda's debut album Popeda was released in 1978, followed by their breakthrough album Raswaa koneeseen (Grease to the Machine) in 1980. The band gained popularity with humorous lyrics and a rock 'n' roll style influenced by bands like The Who and Black Sabbath. Notable albums include Hullut koirat (Mad Dogs), Mustat enkelit (Black Angels). In 2014, Popeda received the Suomi-palkinto cultural award from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Mustajärvi left the band in 2023, marking a significant change in its lineup.
