Pietro Rugolo, known professionally as Pete Rugolo, was born on December 25, 1915 in San Piero Patti, Sicily, Kingdom of Italy. He emigrated to the United States in 1920 and grew up in Santa Rosa, California. He began his musical career playing the baritone horn but soon expanded to other instruments, including the French horn and piano. Rugolo received a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State College and went on to study composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College, where he earned a master's degree. His early work included collaborations with Johnny Richards and Stan Kenton, contributing significantly to Kenton's band during the 1940s and 1950s. His compositions and arrangements for Kenton's band helped propel it to popularity. In the 1960s and 1970s, he focused on television and film scoring, contributing music to series including Leave It to Beaver, Thriller, and The Fugitive. His albums included Introducing Pete Rugolo (1954), Percussion at Work (1958), Behind Brigitte Bardot (1960), and Ten Trumpets and 2 Guitars (1961). Rugolo died on October 16, 2011.
