Biography
Nautical Almanac is a Baltimore-based noise music group formed in 1994 by Carly Ptak and Twig Harper, who met in Ann Arbor as part of the experimental scene that produced Wolf Eyes. The bandâs debut album, Nautical Almanac, was released in 1996 on Hanson Records, followed in 1999 by a split LP with Wolf Eyes. Ptak and Harper ran The Mystery Spot shop from 1997 to 2001 before moving to Baltimore, where they converted a storefront into Tarantula Hill, a venue that hosted acts such as Lightning Bolt. In 2004, the lineup expanded with Max Eisenberg, producing the album Cover the Earth and touring for three months. A 2006 fire at their building destroyed much of their equipment; repairs were finished by 2007, after which the group toured North America, Peru, and Bolivia. Nautical Almanac performed its final show at Baltimoreâs Fields Festival in August 2016 and disbanded.
