Biography
Mitchell's Christian Singers, a gospel music group from Kinston, North Carolina, formed in 1934 and initially included William Brown, Julius Davis, Louis "Panella" David, and Lewis Herring, all former farmers who sang together after work. Discovered by talent scout J.B. Long, they initially recorded as Mitchell's New Four Singers in August 1934. In 1935, Herring was replaced by Sam Bryant, and the group changed their name to Mitchell's Christian Singers. The group was known for their distinctive a cappella style, featuring syncopated spirituals with a "down home" quality. They released over 80 songs over six years on various labels owned by the American Record Company. Notable singles include "Here Am I/Homey, Homey" (1935) and "You Rise Up/Go Ye Prodigal Son" (1936). They also notably performed at the From Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall in December 1938. After their last recordings in 1940, they occasionally performed at community functions in Kinston.
