Medal was an English alternative rock band formed in Oxford in 1998, comprising Dan Lee (vocals, guitar), Mark Willis (guitar), Daniel Kemp (bass), Simon Wickson (drums), and Richard Brincklow (keyboardist). The group evolved from the earlier band The Daisies, whose 1996 single "If I Was Barry White" had attracted attention on Capitol Records and Regal Recordings. Medalâs breakthrough came with the BBC Radio 1âplayed single "Ordinary" in 1998, followed by "Possibility" and "Up Here For Hours" in 1999, which positioned the band alongside acts such as The Verve. Their debut album Drop Your Weapon was released by Polydor in June 1999 and received coverage in the NME; it was followed by a tour supporting Cast, The Bluetones, and The Dandy Warhols. After a Polydor split and a brief selfâreleased EP Porno Song, Medal issued their second album Stuntman on El Producto in 2001, but the band disbanded shortly thereafter without touring the record.
