Mark Van Hoen was born in September 1966 in Croydon, London, England, and is an English electronic music artist. His early career began with releases under the pseudonym Locust, utilizing vintage analogue synthesizers and tape recorders. In 1993, Van Hoen signed with R&S Records, and early releases as Locust included Skysplit (1993) and In Remembrance of Times Past (1994). By the late 1990s, his sound evolved towards a more vocal-oriented approach. He released solo works such as The Last Flowers from the Darkness (1997). His collaborative work with Neil Halstead resulted in Black Hearted Brother's debut album Stars Are Our Home, released in 2013. He has continued to release albums, including Invisible Threads (2018), Views Into the Real World (2020), and The Eternal Present (2025).
